‘Sciatica’ is a term often used to describe any pain or sensory disturbance in the leg, but more accurately refers to severe ‘electric shock-like’ pain radiating along the course of the sciatic nerve from the buttock down the back of the thigh and lower leg. Sciatica results from irritation or compression of the lower spinal nerves as they exit the spine, most commonly due to herniated disc material, infection, or irritation by buttock or pelvic structures.
In addition to sciatica, there are myriad other causes of mechanically-mediated leg pain which your Chiropractor can accurately diagnose.
